The good pub guide review
The four airy, elegant floors here offer lots of enjoyable options for both drinking and dining. There are high stools around equally high shelf tables for chatting, cushioned wooden settles around dark tables on parquet flooring for dining and eclectic décor that encompasses Edward Lear illustrations and antique books on windowsills. Stools line the long wooden counter from which friendly, helpful staff serve Hammerton N1 and Sharps Doom Bar on handpump, 20 malt whiskies, cocktails and 32 wines by the glass. The upstairs restaurant has plush upholstered chairs and wooden tables on more parquet, large house plants and a huge mirror above an open fire. Above that is a loft room that's used for drinks parties. Outside on the front pavement are tables and chairs beneath a striped awning; there's disabled access to the bar but no disabled loos.
The good pub guide food review
Good-looking modern food includes cured salmon with brown crabmeat, fennel, herb dressing and rye crisps, courgette flower with aubergine, heritage tomatoes and basil, a daily changing home-made pie, beef sirloin with fries and red wine jus, pan-fried cod with smoked roe, violet artichokes, sea herbs and lemon pickle, and puddings such as roasted banana and rum parfait with chocolate ganache and strawberry cheesecake with cherry sorbet and balsamic.
