The good pub guide review

Assured of plenty of passing trade owing to its proximity to Highclere Castle (location for TV series Downton Abbey), this a 17th-c rural charmer. Formerly called the Yew Tree, in summer 2019 it gained new owners and reverted to its original name. The main door opens into a heavy-beamed character bar with leather tub chairs and a leather sofa in front of a two-way fireplace housing a chiminea stove, and stools and high chairs against the counter (church candles in chunky candlesticks to either side). There's Penton Park Colonel Bob on handpump and good wines by the glass, served by friendly, helpful staff. Leading off to the left is a room with antlers and stuffed squirrels on the mantelpiece above an inglenook fireplace, books piled on shelves, a pale button-back leather window seat, a mix of wooden and painted dining chairs around nice old tables on red and black tiles or carpet and, at one end, a tartan and leather wall banquette; background music and board games. Dining rooms to the left of the bar, divided by hefty timbers, have high-backed tartan seating creating booths and more wooden or painted chairs around a mix of tables on flagstones or sisal carpet. Doors lead to the garden where there's an outside bar and elegant metal and teak seats and tables on gravel or raised decking. The eight bedrooms are well equipped and comfortable (two accept dogs); breakfasts are good.

The good pub guide food review

As well as breakfast, enjoyable food using seasonal local produce includes black pudding scotch egg with own-made ketchup, tomato, mozzarella and lovage salad, salt and pepper whitebait, roasted cauliflower, chickpea and lentil curry, pie and mash, burger with fries and coleslaw, pan-roasted lamb with potato terrine, and puddings such as ginger rice pudding with white chocolate and rhubarb, and treacle tart with pistachio ice-cream.
