The good pub guide review

Perenially popular with both locals and visitors, this charming inn in the heart of a lovely Cotswold village has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Low-ceilinged bar rooms are smart and contemporary with pale and dark paintwork, exposed stone walls, flagstones and oak floorboards, heavy swagged curtains, plush chairs, stools and window settles around polished candlelit tables, three open fireplaces and country magazines and newspapers. There's a changing selection of ales such as Wye Valley Butty Bach and HPA on handpump, an extensive wine list with around a dozen by the glass and up to six farm ciders in summer; background music. The sheltered back courtyard has solid wooden furniture under parasols, outdoor heaters and its own servery. The six bedrooms are individually decorated and extremely comfortable and breakfasts are particularly good. The pub is owned by Barnsley House spa hotel across the road.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding food includes confit duck with Asian salad, mandarin and sesame dressing, Thai-style crab cakes with lemon mayonnaise, tomato and courgette gratin with aubergine caviar, mushroom and butternut squash linguine with pesto, soused Cornish mackerel with pickled vegetables and sourdough, roast Loch Duart salmon with gremolata crust and summer vegetable fricassée, fish pie in thermidor sauce, battered haddock and chips, and puddings such as hibiscus pannacotta with mixed berries and lemon posset with white chocolate granola and raspberry.
