The good pub guide review
It's lovely to watch the sunset framed by ancient trees from the terrace or interior of this grand Regency-style building with its sweeping views across parkland and fields beyond. Built in the 1810s and once a family home known as Lawnswood House, it's a stylish newcomer to the Brunning & Price group with a large, friendly and easy-going bar at its heart. There are wooden stools by the panelled counter, seats and tables on bare boards and a fine range of drinks that includes St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter and guests such as St Austell Proper Job, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Wye Valley HPA on handpump, craft beers, proper cider, 21 wines by the glass, 65 gins, 45 whiskies and a dozen rums. Staff are quick and helpful, while Poppy the sprocker spaniel welcomes dogs to the bar. Civilised dining rooms (including two private ones) fan out from here with high ceilings and huge casement windows, leather-backed and cushioned wooden chairs and button-back banquettes around tables of all sizes on parquet, flagstoned and carpeted floors, open fires, elegant metal chandeliers, large house plants, and walls hung with gilt-edged mirrors and hundreds of prints. Outside, there's a spacious stone terrace with teak tables and chairs under parasols, plenty of picnic-sets on grass and tasteful deer garden ornaments.

Rewarding food (catering for special diets) includes sandwiches and 'light bites', beetroot risotto with watercress and toasted grains, crispy duck salad with hoisin, watermelon and cashews, lamb and feta croquettes, cauliflower fritters with curried mayonnaise, cheshire cheese, potato and onion pie with red wine jus, honey-roasted cold ham with eggs and chips, South Indian-spiced sea bass fillets baked in banana leaf with coconut sauce, slow roast pork belly with black pudding and colcannon mash, and puddings such as rhubarb and coconut fool and bread and butter pudding with clotted cream. Brunch is served 9-11am daily.
