The good pub guide review
Friendly young staff and a warm welcome draw our readers to this well-run rural all-rounder. There's Hawkshead Windermere Pale, Marstons Wainwright, Moorhouses White Witch and Thwaites Original on handpump, farm cider, ten wines by the glass, 35 gins and around 20 malt whiskies. A popular beer festival is usually held on the early May Bank Holiday weekend. The largely open-plan bar is carefully furnished with several handsomely carved antique oak settles (the finest made in part, it seems, from a 16th-c wedding bedhead), a mix of small old oak chairs, an attractive oak coffer, old hunting prints and engravings and hop-draped low beams. Also, red walls, coir matting, oriental rugs on ancient flagstones in front of a fine old stone fireplace and counter. The pub dogs are called Beryl and Rolo; disabled access. The spacious garden has a well tended but unconventional bowling green; beyond is a wild area that's home to crested newts and moorhens. A handsome side barn houses a shop selling interesting wines and pottery, plus a proper butcher and a deli. This is part of the Ainscoughs group.

High quality food includes sandwiches, home-cured salmon with dill and juniper, heritage potato salad, sour cream and chives, Lancashire tart with black pudding, bacon, sausage, red onion jam and home-made brown sauce, chicken breast with garlic mashed potatoes, sweet chilli and mozzarella glaze and basil oil, lancashire cheese and onion pie with chips and home-made brown sauce, giant couscous salad with a choice of feta, chicken, sea bass or steak, and puddings such as sticky toffee puddings with vanilla ice-cream, and rice pudding with raspberry jam.
