Althorp Coaching Inn
Friendly golden-stone thatched pub with some fine architectural features, popular food, well kept real ales and sheltered garden
The good pub guide review
Set in a picturesque village, this beautiful old pub dates back to the 16th c and has an ancient bar with all the traditional features you'd wish for: from a dog or two sprawled by the huge log fire to old beams, sagging joists and an appealing mix of country chairs and tables (set with fresh flowers) on broad flagstones and bare boards; background music. Also, snug alcoves, nooks and crannies with some stripped-pine shutters and panelling, another log fire and an eclectic medley of bric-a-brac from farming implements to an old clocking-in machine and country pictures. There are plenty of happy customers keen to enjoy the thoughtful choice of food and drink, including Phipps India Pale Ale, St Austell Tribute, Sharps Doom Bar plus guest ales on handpump; also, eight wines by the glass, a dozen malt whiskies and farm cider; regular quiz and open mike nights. A function room is located in the converted stable block next to the lovely cobbled and paved courtyard (also accessible by the old coaching entrance) with sheltered tables and tubs of flowers. More seating is available in the charming garden.
The good pub guide food review
Highly enjoyable food includes sandwiches, feta and mushroom fritters, moules marinière, salmon fillet, wild mushroom risotto, braised lamb shank, dressed Cromer crab and crayfish tail salad, scotch rib-eye, and puddings such as pavlova with strawberries and cream and chocolate brownies.
