The good pub guide review

This 17th-c building, with its two tall chimneys, has an architectural grace about it that the local couple who rescued it from closure a few years ago have reflected in the tasteful but simple interior design. The light, spacious rooms with their natural wood and stone floors have been enhanced with local art and made comfortable with upholstered wall banquettes, but otherwise left uncluttered. The bar has white-painted beams, a woodburning stove in a large fireplace and tall chairs at the pale oak counter, there's a snug with a woodburner (dogs are allowed here) and the high-raftered, airy dining room has RAF-blue paintwork and doors out to the terrace; there's background music, board games and a genuine welcome for all. Courteous staff serve Adnams Ghost Ship and Old Ale, Earl Soham Victoria Bitter, Fullers London Pride and a guest such as Captain Barlow (named for them from Greene King) on handpump, over 20 wines by the glass and as many gins. In warm weather, the three pétanque pistes are put to good use ' as are the chairs and tables under large parasols on the terrace and the picnic-sets on the lawn, especially during summer drinks festivals. Many local walks and cycle rides are described on the website.

The good pub guide food review

The chef's Indian heritage and classic French training are reflected in the seasonal menu, which uses local produce. Wraps are available all the time, hot gourmet sandwiches at Wednesday to Friday lunchtimes; Sunday brunch and roasts are served in sittings. On the main menu, dishes might include sticky chicken wings with tamarind sauce, local duck liver pâté, dressed Cromer crab, butter chicken masala with dahl makhani, raita, roti and poppadum, 28-day hung Suffolk rib-eye or fillet steak with chips, primavera risotto, and puddings such as grilled pineapple with chilli, mint and vegan ice-cream and summer berry eton mess.
