The good pub guide review

This 500-year-old farmhouse in extensive grounds, now part of the Brunning & Price group, has been cleverly extended and renovated to make the most of its original features alongside more modern elements. There are heavy beams (some carved), panelling, rugs on wooden floors and woodburning stoves and open fires in three fireplaces (the linenfold carved bressumer above one is worth seeking out). Also, all manner of individual dining chairs around dark wood or copper-topped tables, lots of pictures, maps and photographs relating to the local area, and windowsills crammed with toby jugs, stone and glass bottles and plants. The airy dining extension has big exposed rafters and windows on all sides. St Austell Brunning and Price Traditional Bitter plus Harveys Best, Long Man Long Blonde and Old Man, Sambrooks Pumphouse Pale Ale and three quickly changing guests on handpump, 24 wines by the glass, 150 gins and 40 malt whiskies; board games and background music. There are some picnic-sets on grass at the front, and plenty of good quality wooden tables and chairs on a back terrace.

The good pub guide food review

An extensive choice of enterprising food, with gluten-free options, includes sandwiches, pan-fried scallops with pea purée and shredded ham hock, barbecue chicken wings, Malaysian chicken curry with coconut rice and steamed pak choi, pork and leek sausages with mash and onion gravy, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, braised lamb shoulder with crushed new potatoes and rosemary gravy, and puddings such as triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and raspberry ripple ice-cream and hot waffle and caramelised banana with toffee sauce and strawberry ice-cream.
