The good pub guide review

This 17th-c pub nestled in the heart of the Blackdown Hills is attractive inside and out, with imaginative food complemented by a good range of drinks. The neatly kept, interconnected dining rooms have exposed stone walls and pillars, wooden beams, church, farmhouse and antique dining chairs around solid rustic tables on polished floorboards, open fires and two woodburning stoves. High chairs line the bar counter where you'll find Otter Bitter and a guest on handpump, Otter Wildsider cider, 17 wines by the glass and a large choice of gins including their own Beau Gin. Outside, there are picnic-sets on decking and seats in the neatly landscaped garden. Dogs and walkers are welcome.

The good pub guide food review

Local produce is used in the interesting food, which includes sandwiches, Devon crab with passion-fruit sauce vierge and garden herbs, beetroot falafel with date and black garlic purée, chargrilled peach and sorrel pesto, roast pork belly with hispi cabbage, samphire, pea purée, filo-wrapped white pudding and hasselback potatoes, Cornish hake fillet with red pepper and basil risotto, puffed rice and salsa verde, rump or rib-eye steak, and desserts such as lemon possett and vanilla rice pudding with rhubarb compote, pink peppercorn shortbread and elderflower sorbet.
