The good pub guide review

This solid Hampshire pub was given a makeover in 2019 and now looks pretty modish, with its carefully polished chairs and tables, mirrors, bookshelves filled with handsome antique books, flagstoned or bare board flooring and a brick fireplace with a woodburning stove. A panelled alcove with banquettes is perfect for a tucked-away chat over a pint, or there are the leather-topped stools lining the bar counter, where they keep Crafty Blind Side, Loxhill Biscuit and a changing guest on handpump, 14 wines by the glass and a farm cider. Staff are courteous and friendly and the atmosphere is chatty and easy-going. The front and back terraces have seats and tables and there are picnic-sets on the back grass by a spreading sycamore, and a popular cabana with piled-up cushions to sit on. The 15 bedrooms are bright and cottagey with handsome, shabby-chic décor; the breakfast menu is worth getting hungry for.

The good pub guide food review

As well as breakfasts, popular food includes sandwiches, prawn and avocado cocktail, mushroom shawarma with pickles and vegan mayo, a pie of the day, a fish of the day, caesar salad with optional chicken, specials such as venison haunch with red cabbage and jus, and puddings such as dark chocolate brownie with ice-cream and a daily changing fruit crumble.
