The good pub guide review

With great walks in the surrounding Forest of Bowland and fishing on the nearby River Hodder, this picturesque country inn with bedrooms and camping is the pitstop of choice for hungry and weary outdoors enthusiasts. The eight individually decorated rooms have antique French beds, comfort mattresses and powerful wetroom showers; there are also four yurts. The two inviting dining rooms and cosy, traditional central bar have had a light refresh and boast cushioned settles and wheelbacks on flagstones, bookshelves and log fires, and the convivial licensees create a cheerful, friendly atmosphere. Three regional beers on handpump change weekly and might include Black Sheep, Copper Dragon, Ilkley Gold or Lytham Blonde, plus 14 wines by the glass, around 35 gins and 30 whiskies; background music. There are lovely views of Pendle Hill and Longridge Fell from the seats on the front terrace and the newly landscaped garden.

The good pub guide food review

Food is particularly good and includes pizzas from an outdoor wood-fired oven and a variety of 40-day dry-aged steaks from grass-fed cattle plus sandwiches, sharing platters (seafood or vegetarian), potted beef with rhubarb, ginger and mustard relish, devilled lambs kidneys, smoked haddock rarebit, Tuscan pork belly and bean stew, poached salmon thermidor, a pie of the day, aubergine, wild mushroom and tomato bake with tamarind bèchamel sauce, Irish stew with soda bread, and puddings; they also offer a two- and three-course set menu.
