The good pub guide review
It's all very relaxed and friendly at this carefully renovated inn, where the beamed bar remains very much the focus, with its woodburning stove and comfortable seating. The helpful, convivial staff keep quality local ales on handpump: West Berkshire Brewery provides a couple ' Good Old Boy and Mr Swift Pale Ale are favourites ' plus one usually local guest, such as Andwell in Hook or Ramsbury near Marlborough. The wine list is also thoughtful: 18 wines by the glass and carafe from a carefully chosen list. Carpeted dining areas have mate's chairs and wheelbacks, cushioned banquettes line cosy window alcoves and a second woodburner ensures there's no chilly spots in winter. There are seats and tables on a small secluded terrace. The local walking is very pretty, and the G&D's nine comfortable, quiet bedrooms provide the opportunity to explore the area for a few days.
The good pub guide food review
After consultation with the pub's many fans, the kitchen has returned to well executed pub classics, including own-made chicken nuggets, breaded whitebait, half a pint of prawns, Italian-style herby meatballs, superfood salads, calves liver and bacon with spring onion mash, a pie of the day and a catch of the day, and assorted burgers (beef, chicken, mushroom and goats cheese, vegan); also lunchtime sandwiches and puddings.
