Country furnishings in a friendly rustic cottage with interesting food, real ales and seats on terraces; bedrooms
The good pub guide review
The look and feel of this medieval cottage set near the river Wye is totally charming. There's a multitude of beams, country furnishings such as stripped-pine kitchen chairs, long pews beside one big table and various old-fashioned tables on flagstones or bare boards and genuinely welcoming staff. Hobsons Best and Wye Valley Butty Bach on handpump, seven wines by the glass, a gin list and local cider and perry. Outside, picnic-sets can be found on the flower-filled front terrace and in the rural-feeling garden at the back. The five bedrooms are quiet and the breakfasts are good.
The good pub guide food review
Highly thought-of food cooked by the landlord includes sandwiches, assorted tapas dishes, potato gnocchi in tomato and basil sauce, smoked salmon and smoked mackerel pâté roulade with pickled fennel and ginger salad, Thai green vegetable curry with saffron rice, griddled Hereford beef steak with chips and a choice of sauce, vegetarian wellington with mushrooms, spinach and brie, fish of the day, roast lamb rump with sun-dried tomato and herb crushed potatoes, braised red cabbage and damson jus, and puddings such as tiramisu cheesecake and chocolate peanut butter tart with spiced rum and mixed berry coulis.
