The good pub guide review

Originally two farmers' cottages, this 17th-c pub retains many original features and has exposed beams, two woodburning stoves and an inglenook fireplace. 'A really great country pub' and 'perfect after walking the Essex Way' are just two positive reports from readers; Friendly staff serve Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and Maldon Drop of Nelsons Blood and Pucks Folly tapped from the cask, 23 wines by the glass, four ciders and home-made elderflower and lemon cordial; background jazz. The cosy beamed dining room features shelves of books, bottles and decanters against timbered walls, and an appealing variety of dining chairs around dark wooden tables set with linen napkins. Tables out in front on decking offer gentle country views.

The good pub guide food review

Tasty food includes lunchtime sandwiches and pub classics such as fish pie, pork sausages with spring onion mash, and home-cooked ham with eggs and chips, seasonal dishes such as Essex skate wing with lemon parsley butter, and whole braised local partridge in cider with smoked bacon and garlic and juniper red cabbage, and puddings such as lemon tart with lemon syrup, spotted dick and custard and chocolate and orange torte with vanilla ice-cream.
