The good pub guide review

In summer, it's relaxing to sit and watch cricket matches on the village green opposite this handsome pub; there's also a large garden with seats and tables on a suntrap terrace, picnic-sets on grass, a gazebo and swings and a play tractor for children. The rest of the year, the bustling bar remains the heart of the place, with friendly, courteous staff serving a good range of drinks from it. You'll find Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and guests such as Blythe Bagots Bitter, Salopian Oracle and Shropshire Gold, Timothy Taylors Boltmaker and a seasonal ale from Wye Valley on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, 50 malt whiskies, 30 gins and two farm ciders. Spreading rooms and nooks and crannies lead off the bar in an interior that has been extended and thoughtfully opened up. One dining room has skylights, rugs on nice old bricks, house plants lining the windowsill, an elegant metal chandelier and a miscellany of cushioned dining chairs around dark wooden tables. Similar furnishings fill the other rooms, and the walls are covered with old photos, pictures and prints relating to the local area and big gilt-edged mirrors; background music and board games. Open fires include a raised central fire pit.

The good pub guide food review

A wide-ranging, inventive menu includes sandwiches, smoked salmon with potato pancake, beetroot and horseradish and chive crème fraîche, a charcuterie plate, chicken liver pâté with toasted ciabatta, Moroccan crispy lamb salad with couscous, marinated apricot and lemon and coriander yoghurt, mushroom bourguignon pie with olive oil mash, greens and red wine jus, and puddings such as baked apple charlotte with salted caramel ice-cream and bread and butter pudding with apricot sauce and clotted cream.
