The good pub guide review
As the oldest pub in Bowness, dating to 1612, the Hole in t' Wall has garnered a wealth of historical character. Its name is attributed to a hole in a wall knocked through by a thirsty blacksmith who couldn't wait for a pint, and it was once run by a champion wrestler described by Charles Dickens as a quiet-looking giant. There's plenty to look at in the character bar, and the split-level rooms have beams, stripped stone and flagstones, lots of country knick-knacks and old pictures, and a splendid log fire beneath a vast slate mantelpiece, with red walls and stools also warming up the dark-panelled room; upstairs, there some noteworthy plasterwork. There's Robinsons Dizzy Blonde, Hartleys XB, Smooth and Unicorn plus a couple of guest beers on handpump, thoughtfully curated lists of whiskies, gins and rums; juke box in the bottom bar. The small flagstoned front courtyard has sheltered picnic-sets and outdoor heaters.
