The good pub guide review

With the Forest of Bowland and Pendle Hill nearby, there are plenty of good walks close to this attractive and well run old coaching inn in the heart of the Ribble Valley. Start with a stroll around the ruins of a 12th-c Cistercian abbey just over the road. The bar rooms have a pleasing mix of nice old and quirky modern furniture (anything from an old settle and pine tables to up-to-date low chairs upholstered in animal print fabric) and a rustic stone floor. Low ceilings, cosy sections, a warming fire and cottagey windows keep it feeling intimate. The dining areas are more formal, with modern stripes and a bookshelf mural; background music and board games. Young, efficient and friendly staff serve beers including Dark Horse Hetton Pale Ale and Robinsons Dizzy Blonde and Ribble Tickler, and a dozen wines by the glass. It's a favourite with dog walkers: pooches are allowed in both bar areas and get their own three-course menu including treats and dedicated drinks such as Pawsecco and a dog beer, Bottom Sniffer. The 11 bedrooms, some overlooking the river, are individually furnished and comfortable and breakfasts are good.

The good pub guide food review

Reliable food includes lunchtime sandwiches, chorizo, new potato and chicken in paprika butter, carrot, beetroot and pea hummus, chicken liver pâté, fish and chips, slow-cooked lamb flank with root vegetables, cauliflower, chickpea and tomato tagine with couscous, cumberland sausage with mash and onion gravy, steak burger with toppings and chips, a pie of the day and puddings.
