The good pub guide review
At the heart of the quaint village of Oving, a few miles east of Chichester, this 16th-c thatched brick cottage was once home to a school teacher called Rose Gribble. It's been a microbrewery and pub for the last 40 years (brewery tours are available): their own-brewed beers on handpump might include Fuzzy Duck, Gribble Ale, Lazy Buzzard, Pig's Ear, Reg's Tipple and seasonal ales ' plus 16 wines by the glass, 40 gins, 20 malt whiskies, 30 vodkas and unusual rums. The chatty bar features a lot of heavy beams and timbering, while the other linked rooms have a cottagey feel with sofas round two roaring log fires; board games. The barn houses a venue for parties. There are seats outside in a covered area and more chairs and tables in the pretty garden with its apple and pear trees.
The good pub guide food review
As well as breakfasts from 9am (not Sunday), the enjoyable food includes goats cheese mousse with beetroot carpaccio and cheese straws, seared queen scallop and chorizo risotto with basil oil, sharing platters, root vegetable tagine with cauliflower couscous, pork and herb sausages with bubble and squeak, slow-braised oxtail with mustard mash and parsnip purée, beer-battered haddock and chips, 10oz rib-eye steak with portobello mushroom and chips, and puddings such as white chocolate and vanilla rice pudding with sloe-gin berry compote and layers of chocolate sponge, chocolate mousse and chocolate ganache.
