Cleverly refurbished and extended riverside pub with cheerful helpful service and a fine choice of drinks and food
The good pub guide review
Scenically situated in the heart of the Ribble Valley, this riverside pub welcomes walkers, cyclists, anglers and a good mix of locals, dropping in and out all day. The various rambling rooms have seating that ranges from attractively cushioned old-style dining chairs through brass-studded leather ones to big armchairs and sofas around an assortment of dark tables. Floors are flagstoned, carpeted or wooden and topped with rugs, while the pale-painted or bare stone walls are hung with an extensive collection of prints and local photographs. Dotted about are large mirrors, house plants, stone bottles and bookshelves and there are both open fires and a woodburning stove. From the central servery, knowledgeable staff serve Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Moorhouses Aspinall Witch (named for the pub) with guests such as Moorhouses Black Cat, Saltaire Blonde, Settle Jericho Blonde and Timothy Taylors Golden Best on handpump, 15 wines by the glass, 50 gins, an amazing 150 malt whiskies and a farm cider; background music and board games. Plenty of chairs and tables on a terrace and lots of picnic-sets in the extensive garden make the most of the waterside position.
