The good pub guide review

This is an especially well run and civilised inn. Many of the casual lunchtime customers are walkers exploring Dartmoor National Park, but the pub also attracts those wanting a more formal evening meal and comfortable overnight stay. The two neatly kept, linked, partly panelled bar rooms have lots of dark wood and red plush, polished antique tables with candles and fresh flowers, old-fashioned prints and decorative plates, and warming winter log fires (the main fireplace has a fine Stuart fireback). Dartmoor Jail Ale and Exeter Avocet on handpump, 15 wines (plus champagne and sparkling rosé) by the glass and 20 malt whiskies. There's also a light and spacious dining room in the lower part of the inn and a residents' lounge. The large, pretty garden opposite has some seats, with more on the little terrace next to the pub. The nine beamed bedrooms are smart (with either garden or moor views) and are highly regarded by our readers, and breakfasts are excellent. There's also a self-catering holiday cottage next door. You can park at the back of the building. Dogs are allowed in the conservatory area and in some bedrooms.

First class food includes sandwiches, chicken and avocado with lemon mayo, wild garlic risotto with parmesan and white truffle oil, lamb and rosemary burger with mint mayonnaise and chips, roast cod with crab croquette, avocado purée, shaved fennel and lemon oil, roasted lamb rump with lamb pithivier, smoked aubergine and red wine jus, and puddings such as tonka bean cheesecake with amaretto ice-cream and chocolate marquise with soaked cherries and cherry sorbet; they also offer a two- and three-course lunch menu.
