The good pub guide review

Set in a picturesque village and handy for both Cheddar Gorge and Bristol Airport, this is a much liked and well run pub. The bar is chatty and convivial with locals perched on stools against the counter where they keep Butcombe Original (the brewery is in the village), St Austell Tribute, Youngs Bitter and a guest on handpump and 18 wines by the glass, served by friendly and efficient staff. Two dining rooms (the one at the back has plenty of big windows overlooking the gazebo and garden) have open doorways, and throughout you'll find slate or wooden floors, beams and standing timbers, three winter fires, plenty of pictures on the planked or painted walls and all manner of high-backed leather, wooden dining or farmhouse chairs around tables of lots of different sizes. Also, fresh flowers, table skittles, a chest containing games and a monthly. There are picnic-sets at the front and also on the back grass; boules. They hold a farmers' market on the second Friday of the month. This is sister pub to the Rattlebone at Sherston (Wiltshire). Disabled access and loos.

The good pub guide food review

From a thoughtful menu, the food includes sandwiches, smoked haddock and mozzarella fishcakes with wilted spinach, caesar salad with chicken croquettes, grilled octopus with pho broth and warm Asian salad, sun-blushed tomato linguine with onion, chilli and garlic, burger with coleslaw and sweet potato fries, sirloin or gammon steak with chips, chicken or vegetable Thai green curry, and puddings such as lemon tart with raspberry sorbet and carrot cake with spiced raisin purée and vanilla ice-cream; Wednesday is steak night.
