The good pub guide review

Enjoying a spectacular, secluded riverside setting, overlooking Ragley Hall Estate, close to Stratford-upon-Avon and the Roman town of Alcester, this is a beautifully and thoughtfully transformed old mill. It's certainly worth looking around before you decide where to sit as the original mill workings are on show, along with high raftered ceilings, heavy beams and timbers, fine brickwork and open fires ' and some windows look out over the mill pond with its family of swans. The rooms and corridors are furnished with antique-style dining chairs, colourful leather armchairs, cushioned settles and stools, all manner of wooden tables on polished floorboards, parquet and rugs, plus elegant metal chandeliers, hundreds of prints and photographs, shelves of books and big house plants. One area is like a sitting room and is much coveted by customers, while there is also a private function room upstairs with its own balcony. Quick, friendly staff serve St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter on handpump plus two guest ales (one from Purity and another from perhaps Hook Norton), more than 110 gins and 21 wines by the glass, including champagne. A carefully planted terrace has wooden chairs and tables under green parasols, and the River Arrow runs the length of the garden. The nine spacious, comfortable and up-to-date bedrooms make an ideal base for exploring the area.

The good pub guide food review

Brasserie-style food includes sandwiches, wild mushroom risotto, barbecue chicken wings, smoked haddock and salmon fishcake, braised feather of beef bourguignon with horseradish mash, crispy beef salad with sweet chilli sauce and roasted cashews, pea and mint tortellini, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and crème brûlée. Afternoon tea is also available, as well as vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.
