The good pub guide review

Dog lovers enjoy this civilised country pub, where all of the 14 comfortable and well equipped bedrooms welcome canine guests; they come with private courtyards and some have hot tubs too. The various bar and dining rooms are smartly furnished. One end of the bar is light and airy with tall chairs lining a high shelf, a couple of unusual, equally high tables with garden planter bases, a contemporary chandelier and stools lining the counter. The other end is cosier, with leather armchairs and sofas facing one another across a low table in front of a woodburning stove; background music and TV. There's West Berkshire Good Old Boy and a guest on handpump, 18 good wines by the glass, a dozen gins and a dozen malt whiskies. The first room leading off has beams and timbering, tartan-upholstered stall seating and leather banquettes, and framed race tickets on the walls. Dining rooms, linked by timbering and steps, are decorated with old fishing reels, a large boar's head, photos and prints, with an eclectic mix of attractive chairs and tables on bare floorboards or carpet. An end room is just right for a private party. Outside, the garden has elegant metal or teak tables and chairs on gravel and grass; there's also a fountain and an outside bar.

Good food includes Scottish smoked salmon with watercress and shaved fennel, truffle mac 'n' cheese fritters, chicken, tarragon and leek pie with mash and buttered greens, Moving Mountain vegan burger with vegan cheddar, guacamole and fries, pan-fried 8oz rump steak with chips and garlic and parsley butter, roast cauliflower with Persian-spiced lentils, spinach and chickpeas, and puddings such as rhubarb and custard crumble pie and lemon tart.
