The good pub guide review

This elegantly extended country pub has a large garden with tables on a terrace and picnic sets on grass protected by weatherproof parasols, plus a fire pit, meaning that the variable British summer is no bar to comfortable alfresco refreshment. The fine range of drinks includes St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus several guests such as Adnams Ghost Ship, Surrey Hills Shere Drop and Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 24 wines by the glass, 60 whiskies and more than 70 gins. Various open-plan rooms are interconnected and split into cosier areas by timbering and painted standing pillars. A couple of dining rooms at one end, separated by a two-sided open fire, have captain's chairs and cushioned dining chairs around a mix of tables on bare boards or rugs; throughout there are wall-to-wall prints and pictures, gilt-edged mirrors, house plants, old stone bottles and elegant metal chandeliers. The busy bar has a long high table with equally high chairs, another two-way fireplace with button-back leather armchairs and sofas in front of it and stools against the counter; background music and board games. One dining room has a big open fire pit in the middle. There's a restored antique tractor outside (a Brunning & Price trademark) for children to play on.

The good pub guide food review

Attractively presented food (with a separate gluten-free menu) includes a meze plate, garlic and chilli king prawns, halloumi fries with salsa, braised shoulder of lamb with crushed new potatoes and rosemary gravy, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, steak burger with toppings and chips, cauliflower biryani with lentil curry and red onion bhaji, and puddings such as hot waffle and caramelised banana with toffee sauce and honeycomb ice-cream triple chocolate brownie.
