The good pub guide review
The position of this pub is really special ' by an expansive sandy bay between jutting headlands with oystercatchers and gulls much in evidence and maybe beach cricket (this is the only pub in Britain whose cricket team has a pitch on the beach). Picnic-sets on the outdoor terrace, which has its own bar, enjoy the lovely view. Inside, the bar is the heart of the place with armchairs to each side of an open fire, stools against the counter, interesting décor such as ropework lighting, oars and a ship's wheel, and welcoming staff serving up to four real ales on handpump, such as Caledonian Deuchars IPA, craft beers from the likes of St Andrews, 15 wines by the glass, a range of malt whiskies and Scottish gins. The attractive, half-panelled dining rooms have woodburning stoves, cushioned wooden chairs and pale tables on bare boards and seaside artwork. Four of the six light and airy, boutique-style bedrooms overlook the water. Sister pub is the Bridge Inn at Ratho.
The good pub guide food review
Tasty bar food using local and seasonal produce includes cullen skink, bangers and mash with crispy black pudding, root vegetables and onion jus, and burger with bacon, cheddar, slaw and chips. The restaurant menu offers beef and haggis fritters with crème fraîche, green chilli, coriander and parsley chutney, mackerel pâté with pickled cucumber, Shetland hake with braised chickpeas, chorizo, cherry tomatoes and chilli, Black Isle rib-eye with a choice of sauce, and puddings such as lime posset with strawberries and shortbread, raspberry eton mess and Isle of Arran ice-cream, sorbet or vegan ice-cream.
