The good pub guide review

This 17th-c former coaching inn has been run by the same friendly family since 1913 ' they even have the original visitors' books from 1897 to 1909. The comfortable 1930s-style lounge on the right has squared panelling, cushioned wheelback chairs, a nice long cushioned panelled corner settle and some good solid tables for eating; also, a collection of whisky-water jugs on a delft shelf over the big brick fireplace, a woodburning stove, a couple of copper kettles and some hunting prints. Adnams Southwold and four guests from breweries such as Crouch Vale, Oakham, Orkney and Swannay on handpump, ten wines by the glass, 100 malt whiskies including locally distilled St Georges, 50 gins and a farm cider. The quarry-tiled, black-beamed public bar has a good local feel, with a juke box, games machine, board games and background music. There's a neat grassed area behind the car park with picnic-sets around a big fairy-lit apple tree and a fenced play area. It gets busy in warm weather, when customers visiting Peter Beales Roses or enjoying the lovely surrounding walks arrive for refreshment, and for the annual beer festival (August) with more than 100 real ales and ciders, live music and a barbecue. The five bedrooms are attractive and comfortable and their four-acre meadow is used as a caravan and camping site from April to September. Dogs are allowed in the garden but not in the pub.
