The good pub guide review

A timeless old favourite, this place was originally a stable block and is hidden away among some of Hampstead's most villagey streets. The old-fashioned front bar has a dark sagging ceiling, brown and cream panelled walls (decorated with old advertisements and a few hanging plates), open fires, bare boards and secretive bays formed by partly glazed partitions. The slightly more intimate back room, named after the painter George Romney, has an embossed red ceiling, panelled and etched glass alcoves, and ochre-painted brick walls covered with small prints; lots of board and card games. Fullers ESB, London Pride and Olivers Island plus a guest or two such as Adnams Ghost Ship and Liberation Ale on handpump, as well as 18 malt whiskies, 14 gins and 20 wines by the glass from a good wine list. The upstairs dining room has table service at the weekend, as does the rest of the pub on Sundays. There are benches on the pavement outside. There's disabled access to the ground-floor rooms.

The good pub guide food review

Popular food includes sandwiches, grilled sardines with Isle of Wight tomatoes, burger with toppings and fries, 8oz rib-eye steak with béarnaise sauce and chips, courgette bread and butter pudding with tomatoes, artichokes and basil, grilled salmon with lemon hollandaise, and puddings such as poached berries with lime gel, hazelnut crumb and meringue and set Valrhona chocolate with honeycomb, raspberries and blackberry sorbet.
