The good pub guide review

This is an attractive, 16th-c red-brick cottage with a deliberately simple, unspoilt little locals' bar ' although it's the first-class food that draws many customers. There is a rustic charm to both the bar and the dining room, with black beamed low ceilings, knocked-through walls and standing timbers, cream paintwork, plain but individual wooden chairs, pews and some high-backed settles on bare boards or tiles and rustic tables. Also, two woodburning stoves, hop bines and wall prints. High chairs line the counter where friendly staff serve Wye Valley Butty Bach tapped from the cask, 11 good wines by the glass including sparkling and pudding choices and farm cider. The good-sized garden has seats on lawns and looks out on to pasture; quoits. Disabled access. There's a self-catering cottage to rent next to the pub.

The good pub guide food review

Creative, tasty food cooked by the landlord includes hot smoked salmon with beetroot and horseradish rémoulade and pickled cucumber, watermelon and goats curd salad with peas, mint and pine nuts, salt cod scotch egg with chorizo and romesco sauce, Middle White pork faggots with peas, mash, onion and red wine jus, aubergine and sugar snap curry with cashew and almond sauce and ginger, coriander and basmati rice, and puddings such as chocolate ganache with griottine cherries, salted caramel ice-cream and honeycomb, and gooseberry and elderflower fool with shortbread.
