The good pub guide review

Carefully refurbished and gently civilised, this is a rambling former cider mill with plenty of character. The relaxed bar has a woodburning stove at one end fronted by armchairs, cushioned wall settles and stools around a mix of tables on bare boards and a fine mix of drinks such as St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter, Timothy Taylors Boltmaker, Church Farm IPA and a guest such as Shakespeare The Bard's Best on handpump, 21 wines by the glass including fizz, 60 gins and 25 rums. Staff are efficient and friendly. The heavily beamed dining areas have button-back banquettes and cushioned wooden chairs around heavy tables and rugs on more floorboards; further rooms are similarly furnished. Throughout there are big house and pot plants, elegant metal chandeliers, books on shelves, gilt-edged mirrors and lots of prints on the walls. The large, attractive garden has picnic-sets on grass, and wooden seats and benches under parasols on a terrace.

Enterprising food includes sandwiches and 'light bites', chicken caesar croquettes, meze plate, beetroot hummus with flatbread, goats cheese and roasted Mediterranean vegetable quiche, 7oz fillet steak with chips and peppercorn sauce, pork sausages with mash, buttered greens and onion gravy, cauliflower, chickpea and squash tagine with couscous, battered cod and chips, and puddings such as lemon meringue roulade with raspberry sorbet and Cheshire Farm ice-creams. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options are available.
