The good pub guide review

A good base for enjoying the fine surrounding walks and the chalk horse at nearby Uffington, this lovely red-brick village pub also offers a genuine welcome and rewarding food and drink. The bar is just the place for a pint by the woodburning stove, with simple furnishings that include pubby chairs and plush stools around a mix of tables on wide floorboards, and more stools against the counter. As well as four regularly changing real ales such as Little Ox Wipeout, Millstone Tiger Rut, North Cotswold Windrush Ale and West Berkshire Good Old Boy on handpump, you'll find 20 wines by the glass and ten gins; background music, TV, and board games. The main dining room has lots of prints on pale walls, cushioned wooden dining chairs and settles with scatter cushions around solid tables and rugs on bare boards, with woodburning stoves at each end of the long room; one red-walled room has similar furnishings on quarry tiles. Picnic-sets with parasols sit outside on a back lawn. Bedrooms are light, well equipped and up to date (dogs are allowed in two of them). The pub offers four walking maps exploring some of the North Wessex Downs, and it's only a mile and half to join the ancient Ridgeway Path.

The good pub guide food review

As well as lunchtime sandwiches, the highly regarded food includes twice-baked Gloucestershire cheddar soufflé with smoked haddock chowder, potted rabbit with mushroom crumb, apricot purée and pickled turnips, Cornish crab ravioli and bisque with crayfish, samphire, apple and coriander, slow-roasted aubergine with tamarind, roasted onion and white bean purée, roast cod with shallot purée, mussels, clams, sea vegetables and ale broth, pollock with fregola, squid, peppers, green olives, pickled lemon and saffron dressing, and puddings such as dark chocolate délice with raspberries and honeycomb and date cake with banana, hazelnuts, banana ice-cream and whisky caramel sauce.
