Renovated inn with stylish décor, good choice of drinks, exceptional food and seats in terraced garden; well equipped bedrooms
The good pub guide review
This highly acclaimed inn ' owned by the Michelin-starred chef Tom Kitchin ' was updated a couple of years ago in an interesting Scandinavian/Scottish style. While food is obviously king here, there's always a warm welcome for those who just want a drink and a chat. The bar has high chairs against the counter, upholstered chairs around pubby tables on bare boards, and Belhaven 80/-, Harviestoun Sunburst Pale and a guest ale on handpump, craft beer such as Campervan Leith Juice, 28 wines by the glass, cocktails and 80 malt whiskies served by knowledgeable, friendly staff; pool table, board games, TV and background music. The main focus is on the dining room (originally the stables) which has its original sandstone walls, a high-raftered ceiling, a large open fireplace, panelling and seating that ranges from button-back wall banquettes to cushioned dark wooden dining chairs around pale-topped tables. A lounge has stylish, contemporary armchairs and sofas on chic pale floorboards. There are plenty of seats and tables outside on a two-level gravelled terrace, and an enclosed brazier. The 13 comfortable, modern bedrooms are in either the main building or two garden cottages across the courtyard ' and it's all just a stroll from the beach and close to Muirfield golf course. Good wheelchair access.
The good pub guide food review
Excellent food following the nose-to-tail approach uses the best local, seasonal produce and gives a modern twist to pub classics. Dishes might include Loch Fyne oysters, chicken liver parfait with pickled cabbage, goats cheese tart, fish pie, roasted cod and shellfish in light curry sauce, spelt and lentil burger with chips, Borders grouse with girolles and game chips, half grilled lobster with garlic and parsley butter, and puddings such as chocolate fondant and pistachio ice-cream sandwich with berries. They also offer a fairly priced three-course set menu at lunch and early evening.
