The good pub guide review
Now part of the Brunning & Price group, this substantial 19th-c flint house was once the home of the Stern family, who also created the adjacent Highdown Gardens out of an old chalk pit ' they're particularly lovely in spring. The pub part is made up of several open-plan rooms, each with their own character and with plenty of space for both drinking and eating. There are long cushioned wall settles, turn-of-the-century-style dining chairs, chunky or high-backed leather seats around solid dark polished tables, rugs on bare floorboards, parquet, black and white floor tiles and carpet, and lots of prints and photos on flint or painted walls. One smallish room is panelled with handsome portraits and another has books on shelves. Throughout you'll find house plants of every size, table and standard lamps, elegant metal chandeliers, fresh flowers and candles, open fires in stone fireplaces and, in the hall, a two-way fireplace fronted by a couple of armchairs. There's an easy-going atmosphere helped along by friendly, efficient staff and a fine choice of drinks that includes St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter, Harveys Best and guests such as Gun Scaramanga Extra Pale and Langham Hip Hop on handpump, 20 wines by the glass, 130 gins and 40 whiskies; background music and board games. Outside at the front is a terrace with teak tables and chairs under parasols and picnic-sets on a lawn. Set further back, in a separate building, the tea room has simple tables and chairs on parquet flooring, flint walls, heavy beams, a glass counter filled with cakes and its own terrace with tables and chairs. The 13 modern bedrooms are well appointed and comfortable. You can walk straight from the pub on to the South Downs for far-reaching views and the sea is just four minutes' drive away.
The good pub guide food review
As well as breakfast, the good contemporary food includes sandwiches, crispy baby squid with chilli sauce, deep-fried West Country brie with apricot chutney and candied walnuts, halloumi fries with tomato salsa, braised shoulder of lamb with crushed new potatoes and rosemary gravy, steak burger with coleslaw and fries, king prawn linguine with garlic and chilli, beef bourguignon with horseradish mash, sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry, and puddings such as hot waffle and banana with cinnamon ice-cream and triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
