The good pub guide review

Quite a lot of the old mill workings, including the huge waterwheel (often turning), have been preserved at this impeccably restored watermill in Llangollen town centre: expect gleaming timber and tensioned steel rails, pale pine flooring on stout beams and lots of bare stone walls. There are good-sized dining tables, big rugs, thoughtfully chosen pictures (many with a water theme) and several pot plants. There are two serving bars. One, away from the water, has a much more local feel with regulars sitting on bar stools, pews on dark slate flagstones and daily papers. There are also seats on a raised deck in front of the pub overlooking the rushing mill race and rapids below; you can also watch steam trains arriving and leaving the station on the opposite riverbank. To drink: Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and Facers DHB on handpump with guests such as Facers North Star Porter, Hawkshead Windermere Pale and Moorhouses Pendle Witches Brew, plus 15 wines by the glass, a good range of malt whiskies and farm cider.

The good pub guide food review

Interesting food (with a separate gluten-free menu) includes sandwiches and 'light bites', deep-fried West Country brie with apricot chutney, halloumi fries with tomato salsa, pea and mint tortellini with pea velouté and asparagus, crispy beef salad with sweet chilli sauce, beer-battered cod and chips, braised shoulder of lamb with crushed new potatoes and rosemary gravy, sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry, and desserts such as triple chocolate brownie and bread and butter pudding.
