The good pub guide review

A Grade II-listed watermill (the wheel was restored when Brunning & Price took on these delightful old buildings), and a pleasure to explore. There are several linked areas on the main upper floor with its heavy beams, plenty of welly spaced tables in different sizes and styles, coal-effect fires in pretty fireplaces and a profusion of often interesting pictures. A section of floor is glazed to reveal the rushing water and mill wheel below, and a galleried section looks down into a dining room, given a more formal feel by panelling. St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus guests such as Ascot Racecard, Delphic Level Crossing, Longdog Lamplight Porter, Old Pie Factory Pie in the Sky and West Berkshire Golden Age on handpump, 40 malt whiskies, 20 wines by the glass, more than 100 gins and local farm cider; background music and board games. Lovely grounds surround the building, with lots of solid tables and chairs on terraces and picnic-sets on grass ' and the mill pond is a fabulous place for nature spotting. Handy for the M3.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding, bistro-style food includes chicken caesar croquettes, seasonal vegetable risotto, hummus with pitta, braised shoulder of lamb with new potatoes and buttered greens, fish pie, sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry, pork tenderloin with colcannon potatoes and apple sauce, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, and puddings such as hot waffle with banana, toffee sauce and honeycomb ice-cream and crème brûlée.
