The good pub guide review

Enter the dark flagstoned bar, with sturdy timber props and beams, a woodburning stove in a stone fireplace and a piano at the back and settle down to a pint of real ale on handpump from Bass, Rhymney and Wye Valley and a guest such as Tomos Watkin from the slate-roofed counter. Your thirst can be further quenched by several good wines by the glass and local organic apple juice and cider. The flower-filled terrace in front of this friendly, well run spot is ideal for clement days, with views from the lush valley to the hills, and there's also a smaller back terrace surrounded by lavender. Traditional it may be, but the four smallish, linked, carpeted dining rooms ' the front pair separated by a massive stone chimneybreast ' conspire with their thoughtfully chosen individual furnishings and lots of attractive prints by local artists to make for a thoroughly civilised ambience. Background music, darts and board games too.

The good pub guide food review

The food is good and rewarding: tapas to share, king prawn, herring and smoked salmon salad, beef burger in a focaccia bun with home-made relish and chips, roasted vegetable risotto, steak and ale pie with chips, calzone pizza with prosciutto, mozzarella, roasted red peppers and capers, chicken madras curry with poppadum and naan, red Thai beef curry, and puddings such as rose crème brûlée and sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce.
