The good pub guide review

Well placed for raptor enthusiasts ' the famous Hawk Conservancy Trust is just down the road ' this lovely village pub enjoys glorious views over Pill Hill Brook from its sandstone terrace. The open-plan front bar, with its brown leather armchairs and plush grey sofas by a low table, sisal matting on bare boards and a log fire in a brick fireplace, is our favourite spot for a relaxed drink. To the left, a tucked-away snug room has horse-racing photographs, shelves of books and a TV. Two dining areas have smart window blinds, black leather cushioned wall seating and elegant wooden chairs (some carved) around pale tables, big oil paintings on pale walls above a grey dado, and a woodburning stove; background music and board games. Black-topped stools line the counter, where courteous staff serve a changing roster of ales, such as Crafty Blind Side and Dark Star Hophead on handpump, and quite a few wines by the glass. Bedrooms are comfortable and stylish (one is reserved for guests with a small canine companion), and breakfasts are good.

The good pub guide food review

Tasty food includes classic prawn and avocado cocktail, mushroom sharwama with vegan garlic mayo, burger (short rib, buttermilk chicken or vegan) with toppings and chips, a fish of the day, gnocchi with triple cheese sauce, basil and truffle oil, a range of steaks with a choice of sauce, caesar salad, and puddings such as dark chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and ice-cream or sticky toffee pudding.
