Genuinely unspoilt, with lots of atmosphere in tiny, dark rooms and lovely summer garden
The good pub guide review
Try to visit this unchanging pub at lunchtime when it's generally quieter than the evening and you can fully enjoy its charm. Three of the tiny unspoilt rooms have their own entrance from the street, but it's much more fun trying to navigate through the minuscule doors between them inside. There's a wealth of dark oak furnishings, sturdy high-backed built-in elm benches, soft lighting and a coal-effect fire. The panelled and wood-floored dining room at the back overlooks the garden. Marstons Pedigree, Sharps Doom Bar, Timothy Taylors Landlord and up to five guest beers on handpump, decent house wines, farm ciders and malt whiskies. The garden, on several levels, has tables and chairs on flagstones and feels secluded thanks to its high ivy-covered walls; there are heaters for cooler evenings.
The good pub guide food review
Popular food includes duck liver parfait with apple, date and tamarind chutney, calamari with chilli and mango salsa, crispy pork belly with dauphinoise potato and red wine sauce, risotto with peas, asparagus and courgettes, marinated roast lemon and garlic chicken with truffled potatoes, vegan burger and chips, and desserts such as sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream and Belgian chocolate brownie with hazelnut ice-cream.
