The good pub guide review
This old-fashioned riverside pub is much loved and has been for decades ' the front snug in particular is very popular, and is in the Guinness World Records as having the smallest bar room at a mere 1.3 metres by 2.4 metres. The low-ceilinged main bar is cosy, traditional and unchanging, with black panelling, red leatherette built-in wall settles and stools around assorted tables and an open fire. It leads to a bigger, similarly furnished back room that's more geared to eating, which in turn leads to a conservatory. Fullers ESB, London Pride and their seasonal beers such as Olivers Island and Seafarers on handpump, and more than 20 wines by the glass including champagne and sparkling wine. Head down steps at the back to reach the verandah with its highly prized tables looking over a low river wall to the Thames Reach just above Hammersmith Bridge; a tiny exclusive area, reached up a spiral staircase, is a prime spot for watching rowers on the water. The pub has played host to many writers, actors and artists over the years (there's a fascinating framed list on a wall); it's said to be where 'Rule Britannia' was composed and was a favourite with Turner, who painted the view of the Thames from here, and with Graham Greene. The street itself is associated with the foundation of the arts and crafts movement ' William Morris's Kelmscott House (open certain afternoons) is nearby.

Popular food includes ham hock terrine with apple and fig chutney, grilled sardines with Isle of Wight tomatoes, artichoke and watercress, chicken schnitzel with apple, fennel, radish and watercress salad, corn-fed chicken with sautéed potatoes, burger (beef or vegan) and triple-cooked chips, and puddings such as set milk chocolate parfait with raspberries, honeycomb and raspberry sorbet and poached berries with verbena gel, burnt meringue and hazelnut crumb.
