The good pub guide review

Always busy and friendly, this spacious, well run Brunning & Price pub is just yards from the River Thames (though there's no view). The light and airy bar has four big leather armchairs grouped around a low table, as well as brown leather wall seats, high-backed Edwardian-style cushioned dining chairs around dark tables and rugs on bare boards. The walls are covered in interesting photographs, maps, prints and posters and there are sizeable house plants, glass and stone bottles on the windowsills and a woodburning stove; the atmosphere is informal and relaxed. St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter plus guests from breweries such as Adnams, Hogs Back, Park Brewery, Twickenham, Windsor & Eton and XT on handpump, a carefully chosen wine list with almost 50 choices by the glass, 70 gins, 80 whiskies, 20 rums and farm cider; staff are efficient and helpful. A metal spiral staircase ' presided over by an elegant metal chandelier ' leads up to the dining area where there are brass-studded caramel leather chairs around well spaced tables on bare boards or carpeting, and more photos and prints. The tables and chairs on the front terrace get snapped up quickly. The entrance to Hampton Court Palace is just across the road. There are a few parking spaces in front, but you'll probably have to park elsewhere.

The good pub guide food review

Well regarded food includes sandwiches, smoked salmon with orange and beetroot salad, barbecue chicken wings, sweet potato, aubergine and spinach Malaysian curry, chicken, ham and leek pie, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, pork and leek sausages with mash and onion gravy, chicken supreme with chorizo, sherry cream and cavolo nero, 10oz rib-eye steak with dijon and tarragon butter and chips, and puddings such as hot waffle with caramelised banana, toffee sauce and honeycomb ice-cream and dark chocolate torte with cherry sorbet.
