The good pub guide review
This 300-year-old country pub just outside Petworth is a good choice if you want to spend a few days exploring West Sussex and the South Downs National Park. It has 14 attractive and comfortable bedrooms, either in the pub or a separate annexe, and all with views ' dogs are welcome too. The bar has a woodburning stove with long wooden slab tables to either side (each set with candles in brass holders and a plant) as well as wall banquettes and settles with scatter cushions, wheelback chairs, painted beams and stools against the counter where cheerful, attentive staff serve Youngs Original and two guest ales on handpump and good wines by the glass; background music. An end room is just right for a small group. The big, airy dining room at the back has spreading country views from large picture windows, wall settles and more wheelbacks and country kitchen chairs with pretty cushions around tables of all sizes on flagstones, and a busy open kitchen. French windows lead out to the terrace, largely enclosed by a marquee and furnished with teak tables and chairs.
