The good pub guide review

The interconnected rooms of this historic coaching inn have been smartly refurbished but retain many of their original features. The front bar has beams, a log fire in an inglenook fireplace and an appealing variety of old wooden and cushioned dining chairs and tables on wide floorboards. It leads to the main room with high chairs by the counter where they keep Arundel Sussex Gold, Greyhound Blonde Bird and Langham Best on handpump, 25 wines by the glass from an extensive list and nine gins; board games. Staff are courteous and helpful, and the atmosphere convivial. There are also high-backed brown leather and antique chairs and tables on pale wooden flooring, the odd milk churn and french windows to a three-level terraced garden. A cosy and popular back bar, also with a log fire, is similarly furnished. This is the perfect place for lunch after a wander round this attractive market town, known for its antiques shops and Petworth House and Park (National Trust). The seven bedrooms (named after trees) are warm and comfortable and breakfasts are good; a three-bedroom Georgian town house is also available.

The good pub guide food review

Appetising food includes crispy confit Creedy Carver duck with charred peaches, salt and pepper squid with smoked garlic mayo, heritage tomato salad with home-made herb ricotta, fishcake with poached egg and watercress soup, summer vegetable salad, burger with toppings and fries, pasta carbonara, organic flat-iron steak with vine tomato, garlic mushroom and triple-cooked chips, and puddings such as roasted peaches with lemon thyme, toasted almonds and vanilla ice-cream and dark chocolate délice with raspberry sorbet.
