The good pub guide review

This friendly, characterful pub manages to retain the feel of a country local, despite being close to the city of Cheltenham. The quarry-tiled beamed bar has chapel chairs and other seats around assorted tables (including one in a bow-windowed alcove) and opens into a lighter, partly panelled area with cushioned settles and stripped kitchen tables. Changing beers from the likes of Bristol Beer Factory, Clavell & Hind, Otter, Purity, Stroud and Wye Valley, six decent wines by the glass, three farm ciders and their own-brand medium sweet perry are served by young, friendly staff. Decoration is in unobtrusive good taste, with winter log fires. A handsome baronial-style separate dining room (once a hunting lodge to nearby Boddington Manor) has similar country furniture, high stripped-brick walls, dark flagstones and candlelight; background music. Outside, there are chunky benches and tables under parasols on a terrace, with some oak barrel tables on brickwork and pretty flowers in vintage buckets and baskets; heaters for cooler weather and a smoker for smoked meats, fish and other treats.

The good pub guide food review

Popular food includes filled rolls, seared pigeon breast with black pudding and honey-roasted beetroot, cheese soufflé with cream and nutmeg, buttermilk fried chicken with coconut dhal, burger with celeriac slaw and triple-cooked chips, crispy calamari with charred watermelon and feta, confit duck leg with smoked pork belly lardons, baby gem and mint salsa, and weekly changing seasonal puddings; they also offer a two-course weekday lunch menu.

Licensee Introduction

As one of very few pubs rated with a star in the Guide we pride ourselves on longevity and local provenance. The pub has been family owned for 12 years, and we cherish the values of warm hospitality, amazing real ales and ciders without any compromise and locally sourced handmade food, upscaled from 'the classics'. The pub has a rural and timeless feel, but with modern influences so that we evolve and remain in touch with current trends. Not least amongst these are an award winning garden with space for 200 people, and a dining room with a Baronial feel, worthy we hope, of the meal experiences we aim to deliver...

Our Food

Our menus change seasonally to reflect local and seasonal changes, in addition a daily changing specials boards for added variation and treats ! We source both food and drinks wherever possible from Gloucestershire and the surrounding counties. Notably we source whole carcass meats and butcher, brine, smoke and process them into prime cuts, sausages, burgers, charcuterie and more to add excellence to our offering. We aim to add a twist to pub classics and to that end we employ 6 trained chefs, one of which is a dedicated pastry chef. Sunday sees us serve 3 roasts and typically 2 fish and 2 vegetarian/vegan dishes and excellent homemade desserts.
