The good pub guide review

This sizeable 16th-c black and white country dining pub is part of the Brunning & Price group. The bar and dining rooms are interconnected by open doorways and standing timbers to create separate areas that share the same bustling, friendly and informal atmosphere: heavy beams, assorted flooring including polished flagstones, old brickwork, bare boards and carpet (often topped with rugs), a two-way open log fire, and wooden stools against a rustic bar counter. Throughout there are handsome antique chairs, some cushioned and some leather, a medley of solid tables, lots of prints, portraits and mirrors on pale contemporary paintwork, elegant metal chandeliers and numerous house plants. St Austell Brunning & Price Traditional Bitter, Harveys Old Ale, Long Man Best Bitter, Timothy Taylors Landlord on handpump, 18 wines by the glass and around 40 gins. Staff are efficient and cheerful; background music. There are seats and tables on terraces and under a gazebo, a fire pit and picnic-sets on a lawn; also, a play tractor and an equipped play area for children. It's handy for the Bluebell Railway and Sheffield Park (National Trust).

The good pub guide food review

Good, up-to-date food includes sandwiches, prawn cocktail with marie rose sauce, baked camembert with toasted ciabatta, pea and mint tortellini with garden pea velouté and asparagus, deep-fried cod in beer batter with chips, steak burger with coleslaw and fries, roast pork tenderloin with colcannon potato and apple purée, Malaysian chicken curry with pak choi, and puddings such as sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and vanilla ice-cream and triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce.
