The good pub guide review

This is a handsome stone-built market town in gorgeous Lune Valley countryside, convenient for the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland. The inn backs on to the churchyard and dates from the 17th c ' there's plenty of history to the place. The rambling beamed bar has flagstones and stripped oak boards, pews, armchairs and cosy window seats, paintings on cream walls and a woodburning stove. Hawkshead Bitter, Kirkby Lonsdale Monumental Blonde and Marstons Wainwright on handpump served by helpful, friendly staff. There are a couple of dining rooms (one is red-walled) with a two-way woodburning stove and leather banquettes; background music. Bedrooms are attractive, comfortable and warm and several are dog-friendly; dogs get a welcome pack and they offer dog walking and sitting too. Disabled access. Turner stayed here in 1818 when painting the picture known as 'Ruskin's View'. Thursday is market day.

The good pub guide food review

First class food using the best local seasonal produce includes lunchtime sandwiches, glazed pork cheek with apple, celeriac and hazelnut, beetroot-cured trout, fried pollock, braised lamb shoulder with crushed potato, gnocchi with mushrooms, brie and courgettes, and puddings such as millefeuille and ginger cake.
