The good pub guide review

Beguiled by its seaside setting, the Ship's proprietor, Christine Forsyth, came here from Hertfordshire over 20 years ago on impulse and her pub has since earned a reputation for own-brew beer, a fine crab sandwich, bags of character and a friendly welcome. Tables outside the row of converted fishermen's cottages look across the sloping village green and down to the sea and you can walk from here along the massive stretch of empty, beautiful beach with views all the way to Dunstanburgh Castle (English Heritage). Inside, the plainly furnished but cosy bare-boards bar on the right has nautical charts on dark pink walls, while another simple room on the left has beams, bright modern pictures on stripped-stone walls and a woodburning stove in a stone fireplace. They brew their own beers on site and usually have four on handpump at any one time from a range of 18 or so ' maybe Ship Inn Dolly Day Dream, Red Rye or Sea Dog stout ' plus Black Sheep Bitter. It can get extremely busy at peak times, so it's best to book in advance, and be prepared for a queue for the bar. There's no nearby parking from May to September, but there is a car park up the hill.

The good pub guide food review

Good locally sourced food ranges from lunchtime sandwiches (including hand-picked crab) and regional snacks such as kipper fish cakes, Jarvis pies and filled 'stottie' bread rolls to more expensive dinner choices. Perhaps local organic salami and chorizo with home-made piccalilli, kipper pâté with oatcakes, roast monkfish wrapped in parma ham with roast cherry tomatoes, rib-eye steak or roasted beetroot with goats cheese and hazelnut salad, and puddings such as honey and walnut tart with vanilla ice-cream and Doddington's Dairy berwick edge cheese with home-made apple chutney.
