Simple pubby furnishings in bar, cosy restaurant, decent food and picnic sets on village green
The good pub guide review
Picnic-sets outside the front of this traditional pub make the most of its charming location opposite the village green, and the summer window boxes are lovely. Inside, the heavily beamed bar has a relaxed, chatty atmosphere helped along by cheerful staff and plenty of regulars. You'll find built-in wooden window seats, tall farmhouse and other red-cushioned pubby chairs on flagstones or bare boards, a woodburning stove in an inglenook fireplace with a stuffed boar's head and large clock above it, and horsebrasses on the bressumer beam; a noticeboard has news of beer festivals and live music events. Wadworths IPA, 6X and a guest beer such as Bath Gem on handpump, eight wines by the glass, 17 malt whiskies and a farm cider. The back restaurant is beamed and cottagey with standing timbers, dark wooden chairs and tables on floorboards and rugs, and plates on a dresser.
The good pub guide food review
Remarkably fair value, honest food includes lunchtime sandwiches, smoked mackerel pâté, crispy mushroom dippers with apricot and ginger chutney, home-made soups, chicken breast with white wine and tarragon sauce, root vegetable nut roast topped with goats cheese, 10oz local sirloin steak with red wine sauce, and puddings such as Baileys and dark chocolate cheesecake and banoffi pie with caramel sauce and vanilla ice-cream.
