Pub pets: Vincent and Ritchie the Norfolk Terriers

The good pub guide review

Garlanded with awards, this neatly appointed inn, standing in its own extensive well-tended grounds, embodies every rural charm a visitor could wish for ' right down to productive bees and chickens contributing to the menu. Dog lovers will also be delighted by the resident pooches: Norfolk terriers Vincent and Ritchie. A thoughtful choice of drinks includes Longdog Bunny Chaser and West Berkshire Good Old Boy on handpump, 12 wines by the glass from a smashing list, farm ciders, good aperitifs and home-made elderflower cordial; background music. The dining room is attractively decorated with an assortment of cushioned oak dining chairs around a mix of polished tables on terracotta tiles, pretty blinds, brass candlesticks, flowers and windowsills stacked with cookery books. The garden has colourful herbaceous borders, teak tables and chairs under parasols and some picnic-sets. The food receives constant admiration from our readers, and this immaculately kept and pretty little spot is also a lovely place to stay, with four deeply comfortable and very well equipped bedrooms; breakfasts are first class: 'your breakfast eggs were either laid today or yesterday'.

The good pub guide food review

Exceptional food (from a sensibly short and daily changing menu) uses their own vegetables and livestock (50 or so pedigree Jacob sheep graze in the field out back), honey from their own bees, herbs from next door and other carefully sourced produce, and is cooked by the chef-landlord Jason. Dishes include smoked salmon with radishes and avocado, twice-baked cheddar cheese soufflé on sautéed courgettes with parmesan, rope-grown mussels in white wine, parsley and cream, Baughurst House roe deer and root vegetables in red wine with a pastry lid and mash, smoked haddock, cod and salmon fishcake with sautéed samphire, whole roast partridge with sticky red cabbage, mash and parsnip crisps, and puddings such as marmalade sponge with egg custard and baked caramel custard with oranges and cinnamon syrup. They also offer a two- and three-course lunch.
