The good pub guide review

The modern waterside complex of Gunwharf Quays is a really popular place for Pompey natives and the area's many tourists, so booking is advisable at lunch. This Grade I-listed, 18th-c former customs house has big windows and high ceilings, with nautical prints and photographs on pastel walls, coal-effect gas fires, unobtrusive lighting and well padded chairs around sturdy tables of varying sizes on bare boards; the sunny entrance area has leather sofas. Broad stairs lead up to a carpeted restaurant with similar décor. Fullers London Pride, ESB and Gales HSB, Dark Star Hophead and a couple of changing guests on handpump, a decent range of wines by the glass, 24 gins and good coffees and teas. Staff are efficient and the background music well reproduced. Picnic-sets out in front are just metres from the water; the bar has disabled access and facilities. The graceful Spinnaker Tower (170 metres high with a glass floor and stunning views from its observation decks) is just round the corner.

The good pub guide food review

Crowd-pleasing food includes London Pride cheddar rarebit, honey and mustard chipolatas, beer-battered haddock and chips, plant burger with pickles and triple-cooked chips, spiced green lentil, cauliflower and spinach curry, rump steak and chips, and puddings such as chocolate brownie with Laverstoke Farm buffalo milk ice-cream and molasses, date and hops sticky toffee pudding.
