The good pub guide review

Journey down a long driveway to this black and white Victorian building, with its blaze of flower-filled gardens and carefully tended lawns stretching into the distance, and you'll feel like you've arrived at an elegant country mansion rather than a pub. Multiple eating and drinking areas including one set out as a library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, and another in a conservatory overlooking the grounds. There's a 16th-c inglenook fireplace and decoration throughout ranges between the intriguing, the stylish and the sumptuous, with numerous pictures and prints, house plants and old stone bottles. An impressive line-up of drinks served by well trained staff includes Phoenix Brunning & Price Original and guests such as Big Hand Seren, Brimstage Trappers Hat Bitter, Hawkshead Windermere Pale, Purple Moose Snowdonia Ale, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Weetwood Eastgate on handpump, an 80-strong malt whisky collection, 20 wines by the glass and several gins and rums. There are seats with parasols on the terrace and picnic-sets on the grass. Good disabled access.

The good pub guide food review

Rewarding food (with a separate gluten-free menu) includes deep-fried West Country brie with apricot chutney, halloumi fries with tomato salsa, smoked salmon with orange and beetroot salad, roast duck breast with crispy leg croquettes, celeriac purée and cherry jus, beer-battered cod and chips, grilled sea bass fillets with potato and shallot terrine, braised shoulder of lamb with crushed new potatoes and rosemary gravy, beetroot, quinoa and soy bean burger and fries, and puddings such as chocolate and orange tart with passion-fruit sorbet and hot waffle and caramelised banana with toffee sauce and honeycomb ice-cream.
