The good pub guide review

This attractive, weatherboarded old country pub is a fine choice for a drink and a chat or a full-blown meal. Although the open-plan rooms are connected, there are nooks and crannies and standing timbers that give a sense of being separate and yet part of the chatty, bustling atmosphere. Pine wall boards and bar stools are ranged along the timber-clad copper-topped counter where they keep Larkins Traditional and a couple of guests such as Tonbridge Coppernob on handpump, 20 wines by the glass from a good list and local gin. There's also a hotchpotch of wooden tables (with fresh flowers and candles), fairly closely spaced chairs on dark boards or coir, a woodburning stove and photographs of the pub and local scenes; background music. Some walls are of stripped stone. The sunny, brick-paved terrace has plenty of teak chairs and tables under parasols, and olive trees in white pots. Good nearby walks.

The good pub guide food review

Pleasing food includes Thai crab cakes, greek salad, crayfish cocktail, a pie of the day with mash, seafood paella, piri-piri half chicken with corn on the cob, harissa halloumi salad, steak burger with skinny fries, roasted butternut squash risotto, pizzas, marinated swordfish steak with seared chicory and herby new potatoes, and puddings such as chocolate brownie with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice-cream and frozen blackberry and apple yoghurt cake.
